Root canal therapy (endodontic treatment) is a procedure used to remove inflammed or infected tissue from the canals inside a tooth.
Deep within each tooth are one or more narrow canals which contain blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue. This “pulp” is essential for the growth and development of the tooth.
A root canal procedure involves repeated enlargement of the affected canals, the precise removal of all decayed, inflammed or infected pulp tissue, and treatment with a disinfectant substance. The canal is then filled with an inert material and resealed to protect from further damage.
In carrying out this intricate procedure, the dentist uses digital X-rays to precisely locate the path of the tiny canals and measure their depth down to the apex (end) of the roots.
Root canal treatment can be used to prolong the life of severely decayed teeth. Without treatment, the infection may progress to cause significant pain or the formation of an abscess.
